Masters 2012 Odds: Tiger Woods Too High On Betting Menu

Apr 3, 2012 – even when Tiger Woods’ golf game was in the dumps, he was still turning in solid performances at the Masters, so there’s bound to be plenty of excitement this week about his chances of winning at Augusta. And about paying off in Vegas, where tons of Masters prop odds have Tiger’s fingerprints on them.

Although Woods hasn’t won he Masters since 2005, he’s been in contention at the major tournament every single year. And after his win two weeks ago, bettors immediately hopped on his 7/1 Masters odds and quickly bet it down to 4/1. And given his success at Augusta, maybe that’s with good reason. Woods’ last seven results at the Masters:

  • 2011 – T-Fourth
  • 2010 – T-Fourth
  • 2009 – T-Sixth
  • 2008 –Second
  • 2007 – T-Second
  • 2006 – T-Second
  • 2005 – First

Going back even further, Woods has ended up in the top-10 at Augusta 12 of 15 times since 1997, the year he claimed his first green jacket. His “off” years came in 1999 (T-18th), 2003 (T-15th) and 2004 (T-22nd), withs wins in both 2001 and 2002.

And that’s why betting on Woods to at least be in contention at the Masters is always a popular wager, with sportsbooks this year listing him at -300 to end up in the top-10, and at 4/5 to finish in the top-five. He is even favored to be the first-round leader and in head-to-head betting lines against Rory McIlroy.

In all the Tiger hoopla, however, let’s not forget about his long-time rival, Phil Mickelson. Lefty fell out of contention at the Masters last year – he ended up in 27th place – but he’s won the tournament three times and turned in these recent results:

That’s 11 top-10 results since 1999 at the Masters for Mickelson, and eight top-5 finishes. And when you wager on Lefty on the golf odds, you get a little more value than when you bet on Woods – the sportsbooks tracked by OddsShark.com have him at -130 to end up in the top-10 at Augusta this week, at 2/1 to finish in the top-5, and at 11/1 to take home his fourth green jacket and fifth major title.

Tiger vs. Phil is also a popular prop wager at the sportsbooks, with Woods a -155 favorite over the +120 underdog Mickelson to post the lower score this week. And if you’re feeling really lucky – and missed out on the Mega Millions jackpot — you can also find +10,000 odds on either Woods or Mickelson getting a hole-in-one at Augusta National this week. Other golfers in the top group of contenders on the odds to win the Masters this week: Rory McIlroy (11/2), Luke Donald (16/1), Lee Westwood (16/1), and Hunter Mahan (28/1), with defending champ Charl Schwartzel set at 33/1 odds to win.
