Menomonee Falls student does not make semifinals in National Spelling Bee

OXON HILL, Md. — a 14-year-old Menomonee Falls student was Wisconsin’s lone entrant in the 85th National Spelling Bee. However, Heloise Cheruvalath failed to make the cut when the list of 50 semifinalists was named Wednesday afternoon.

Cheruvalath was among 278 participants who won local and regional spelling bees to make it to the Scripps National Spelling Bee. The contest got under way Wednesday, May 30th at a convention center outside Washington D.C.

Round One was a 25-word test. Spellers earned one point for each word spelled correctly on the round One test. There were 253 spellers who spelled correctly in the oral round two and 240 spellers who spelled correctly in the oral round Three. each correct spelling resulted in a three-point bonus being added to their round One scores.

Their scores were used to determine the field of 50 semifinalists.

Heloise is in the eighth grade at North Middle School.
